Decorate a Table Runner with Paint

Level: Experienced

If you’re looking for that perfect touch of holiday cheer your dining room needs, look no further than a custom-decorated table runner. When employed with a festive centerpiece and other accoutrements, a holiday-themed table runner welcomes family and friends with the spirit of season. And it’s something any crafty DIY-er can accomplish in a couple of hours with a table runner, stencils and the right paint.

    • Step 1. Choose a Design

Find a table runner design that you like. Look online and find patterns that appeal to your taste and that will merge with the existing room design or a specific holiday theme. If need be, sketch your design ideas on paper with a pencil so you have an outline from which to work. One of the easiest ways to create a cohesive pattern is to use stencils. You can create your own or buy stencils from craft and hobby stores or other retailers. If you find the perfect image for your stencil online, but it’s too small or too large, remember that you can probably print it and have it blown up or reduced at a copy shop. You can then have it printed and laminated on thicker paper for a stencil.

Purchase a blank or solid-color table runner on which to paint your design. You can also purchase the fabric of your choice and create your own blank canvas. Burlap and canvas are two great materials with which to create a table runner. Choose a runner color that will work with your design or go with traditional holiday red or green. You can also paint a base coat and then add stenciling, stripes, etc. in a complementary color. Remember to measure your table before purchasing the runner to be sure that you get the right size. It is often customary for a table runner to extend a few inches past the edges of the table, lengthwise, or even in the center of the table, widthwise.

    • Step 2: Prepare a Workspace

Find a suitable workspace to make your table runner. Use a worktable if you have one. If not, you can use the kitchen or dining table. Just cover the table with newspaper or plastic sheeting and put a drop cloth on the floor to avoid getting paint where you don’t want it.

    • Step 3: Apply Stenciling

Use a tape measure or ruler to measure in from the edge of the runner to mark the area of your first stencil or masking (if you’re creating borders or other straight lines). Having precise measurements will help keep your design straight and/or consistent. If you’re creating straight lines, measure in from the edge of the runner in intervals to keep the line straight. Apply painter’s tape along the line, periodically checking that it is straight. If you’re stenciling, place your stencils on the runner in your desired pattern/design. Use the tape measure again to ensure that they are equally spaced so that the design is symmetrical. Once you have the stencils in place, tape them down securely with a piece of painter’s tape in each corner so that they won’t move or let paint bleed underneath, marring your work.

      Helpful Tip

It may be helpful to have someone assist you in keeping the runner taut and held in place on the table while you work, for best results. Similarly, you can tape the runner down on the table to hold it in place.

Paint within stencils or masked areas for borders using a small roller, small painting sponge or foam paintbrush and EasyCare® Ultra Premium latex paint and primer in-one. Fill just the tip of the applicator with paint and lightly stamp into the cut-out area of the stencil — making sure that you paint a little bit over the cut-out edges so that you create a crisp outline of the stencil image. Once you’ve filled in a stencil with paint, carefully pull the stencil away from the runner. Continue in this fashion until you’ve completed your design. You may need several light coats to get the best and most long-lasting results. Let the paint dry for the recommended amount of time on the paint can label.

      Safety Alerts!

Wear latex gloves to protect your hands and to make clean up easier.

Open a window to ventilate the room when painting.

For borders and straight lines, let the paint dry and then hold the runner down while you carefully remove the strips of painter’s tape at a 45-degree angle so you don’t accidentally remove any of the paint.

      Helpful Tip

Consider using a product such as Thompson’s Water

Seal fabric seal to protect your new painted runner from stains due to food and drink spills.

Nice job! Now you’ve made a festive holiday table runner to celebrate the season!
