DIY Jewelry Organizer

DIY Jewelry Organizer

By

Ever since we moved into our new home, I spend much less time in my kids’ rooms since we have a first-floor master. I don't really need to go upstairs much unless I'm going up to chitchat or say goodnight. The other week I was in my daughter's room and noticed her jewelry all over the place and no organization at all, and I started to get the organizing itch. I feel the need to organize things, and her jewelry being all over the place was a bit unnerving to me. I talked to her about it, and she thought it would be a great idea to make a jewelry organizer – something that would hang on the wall to get it off of her dresser and bathroom counter.

This design is great because you can make it as large or small as you want, and you can customize it to fit your needs. If you have a bunch of necklaces, just make a few more bars to hold them, or if you have a ton of bangle bracelets just accommodate the room for those. We were trying to keep this one around 22” by 28” (it will fit into a standard size frame) which is the size of this board that I found in my local True Value Hardware. I went with a classic solid black that is actually a chalkboard paint. We thought it would be fun to create a space on the side where my daughter can put together her looks.

So if she has an outfit she's planning to wear she can hang up the earrings, necklace and bracelet and put the look together on the side of it so it’s all ready to go. This wall mounted jewelry organizer comes together pretty quickly with minimal tools and would make a great birthday gift for the teen or young adult in your life.

What you will need:

  • 22x28 inch piece of panel board (oak, birch, pine…)
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Roller tray and roller
  • ¼ inch dowel cut into (5) 3 inch pieces
  • ¾ inch by 36” poplar square
  • Heavy duty Velcro
  • Drill
  • ¼ inch bit
  • 2 pieces copper pipe 24 inches long and ¼ inch round
  • Cup hooks (7/8 inch)
  • Old picture frame (22x28 inch in size)

How to:

  1. Paint the board the color of your choice. I used black chalkboard paint.
  2. Attach the cup hooks where you would like the necklaces to hang.
  3. Cut dowel rod into 3 inch pieces.
  4. Drill holes in the poplar to hold the dowel pieces in place for the rings.
  5. Place a small dab of wood glue and place dowel in the holes. Let dry.
  6. Place the board into the frame and duct tape the board into place. You could also attach with glue if you wish to have it permanently in place.
  7. Attach the ring holder piece to the bottom of the board with Velcro.
  8. Attach cup hooks to hold copper bars.
  9. Attach other hooks where you choose to hold other smaller necklaces or scarves.

Like I said, you can totally customize it!

Place the S hooks on the copper bars to hang necklaces or bracelets.

This is a great beginner’s project too. If you aren’t familiar with using a drill or a saw, this project requires little skill for a big payoff:)
