Create Your Own Wall Art

Create Your Own Wall Art

By

I think this is the easiest yet most ‘wow factor’ project that I have tackled for the True Value DIY Squad. As an interior decorator I go into a lot of people’s homes, and one common trend that I see is a big problem with artwork. Either a home owner has nothing up on the wall or they have bad artwork reproductions on the wall that were picked up at big box retailer. Artwork is a wonderful thing, and it should be personal to the home owner. It's a great way to show people what you love and your style. The main problem clients have with artwork is that it can be a high ticket purchase and people tend to get shy with actually making the purchase when it's something that's purely decorative and not a piece of furniture that they can utilize.

If you are not shy with DIY though, there are ways to get large scale original artwork for your home. Make a quick trip to True Value to pick up a sheet of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) and D-rings for hanging. Along with those hardware picks you also need to go to your local print shop like Kinkos or Staples and get a high resolution photo of your choosing enlarged and printed as an engineer’s print. An engineer’s print is a black and white copy that is 3'x4' and only $7.99.

Now how are you going to tackle framing such a large scale piece of artwork? That's when your sheet of MDF comes into play.

Take your sheet of MDF and cut it into panels. Depending on your photo you may want to make 3 panels and make a triptych or 4 if you want to use the entire 3'x4' section of the photo. The size of your cuts depends on how many panels you want, but just make sure they are equal.

Next, lay down your artwork above the MDF panels and use a razor blade to cut your photo into slices to fit the MDF pieces.

Then use spray adhesive on the back of your paper and on the MDF sheets to apply the photos.

Make sure to smooth out the paper really well. With the spray adhesive you have a little give and can move the paper around a bit if anything gets misaligned. Just be really careful because the paper is really thin.

Use a razor blade to trim any excess paper off of the sides.

Once all of your panels are done it's now time to figure out how to hang them. This where your d-rings come into play.

Simply flip your MDF panels over and screw your d-rings into place around 5" down from the top of the panel.

You can then use the d-rings to hang them on the wall as is or string picture frame wire in between and hang them that way.

I like leaving the border exposed because the MDF is a neutral color and doesn't need any embellishing, but if you want your panels to pop a bit more then you can paint it a bold color.

Some people may recommend applying a poly coat to protect the photo, but I tried that and due to the thin nature of the paper it didn't work out. The poly coat made wrinkles and started to make bubbles on the paper. Since your artwork is going to be high up on the wall I don't think a protective coat is necessary.
