Ever since we moved into our new home, I spend much less time in my kids’ rooms since we have a first-floor master. I don't really need to go upstairs much unless I'm going up to chitchat or say goodnight. The other week I was in my daughter's room and noticed her jewelry all over the place and no organization at all, and I started to get the organizing itch.

Hi y’all, it’s Monica from Monica Wants It! The holidays are here! I always get really excited to see all the new décor out at my favorite stores… until I see the prices. Then I get really excited to recreate it at home for way less. I’m obsessed with black and gold lately, so I decided on black, white and gold as the color scheme for all the holiday décor in my home. Plus, it looks great all the way through New Year’s Eve.
There is nothing better than an easy update that can instantly change the entire look of a room – it’s called the power of paint. While changing a color can significantly transform a room, going one step further and adding stripes to your walls can create some sophisticated interest as well.
Do you have a room in your home that has wild, bright or dark color walls? One that needs a new color to update it? In my house I had such a room… with not one, but two tones of neon green! I bet you can tell that this was once the room of a teenager. See the blocks of tan? That was the previous wall color. Bookshelves were mounted to the walls and not moved in these spots when the walls were painted neon green. Looks kind of like a checkerboard – and a nightmare to paint over with a light color.
End tables are a dime a dozen at tag sales…and they are the best way to test out your painting/refinishing skills. Folks worry all the time… “What if I paint it and don’t like it!?!” but when you start out with a beat up $10 table, there should be no worries in your mind at all! Just go for it! Chalk paint is all the rage because of the weathered finish it gives to painted pieces. What I love about it is that it’s hard to mess up. There is no need to be perfect…the look you are going for is imperfect—sounds perfect right?!? (perfectly confusing??) Ok, this is how easy it is to make your own chalk paint with any latex (water based) paint that you may have lying around.
Never underestimate the power of paint. However, today I’m taking paint outside the home and writing about how to revamp exterior spaces with paint. The process is a little different than interior painting since it requires a bit more prep work, but it is even more rewarding - in my opinion - than interior painting.
I have always been a fan of custom built-in bookcases but have been intimated by their price and the skill required to create them. However, about a year ago I enlisted the help of my father and a few other skilled family members to help me transform a few bookcases into a custom entertainment unit. I was thrilled with the results and learned that a little paint and crown molding goes a long way.
The addition of a deck is one of the most popular home improvement projects. A well-designed, well-built deck not only expands the outdoor living space of your home but increases the property value as well. Whether you choose wood or composite decking, the truth is both require some form of general maintenance to ensure a long lasting, safe, sound structure. Decks take the most abuse of any surface around the home. From heavy foot traffic to year-round sun, rain and snow, they must be maintained, protected and able to withstand constant harsh elements and abuse.
Hi! I'm Taryn from Design, Dining and Diapers, a blog where I talk about DIY tutorials, home decor, crafts and occasionally a few recipes. I'm so excited to be on the True Value DIY Squad! Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and get started on an easy home improvement project? Today, I'm chatting all about Painting a Concrete Garage Floor.
If you are a homeowner and tackle DIY and home improvement projects, then I am pretty sure you have a few cans of paint hanging around in your basement or garage that are leftover from previous projects.
I probably have more than most people since I write about paint for a living and save all the leftovers to use for touch-ups. Plus, when I need only a small amount for a project having a stash on hand saves time. I have even been known to make my own
paint colors by mixing leftovers together, creating a truly custom color.
There are many ways you can make small spaces in your home look bigger by using color. One of the most obvious ways is through paint. I love the rooms in my home to feel light and airy, so I tend to lean towards lighter neutral colors. Neutral walls
are a great base for a room because no matter how many times you swap out your decor, the walls always match.
My front door has been an eyesore since the day we moved in. It was sporting a flat coat of burgundy paint that was applied in a sloppy manner, so there was paint on the window panes, door knob and knocker. And there were places where the undercoat of
paint was still visible. It wasn’t a great first impression when entering the house. So, I did what I always do – I painted it. First black, then a refresher coat of satin black and then I changed it to red for a photoshoot. The final coat of red paint
was a disaster. With so many coats of paint along with bubbles of sap that have seeped to the surface…it was to the point where it needed to be stripped and refinished to really look good. Given the fact that you could see daylight in a few places through
the door, I decided it was time to replace it. (And a better option than spending hours stripping away who-knows-how-many coats of paint!)
Hello there! How was your weekend? We had a great one - guess WHAT? Stink Eye Sis got engaged!! :) So excited! So now we have a wedding to plan - how fun is that? We also continued to get some stuff done outside. Make that ME - hubby was out of town
and I sweated out a third of my body weight (I WISH) and worked on some outdoor projects. Funny that the temps have "dropped" into the 80's and are a bit more bearable, but that coincided with humidity out the wazoo.
Well, it's the end of July and I've just finished up my summer vignette in the foyer - welcome to my world. ;)
I've had most of it done for umm...weeks. Since May? There was one small detail I've been putting off all that time that I FINALLY just finished up. More on that in a smidge. I don't think I've ever really decorated with anything beach-inspired in our
house...like, ever. Until now! It must have been the summer Pottery Barn catalog this year, because all of the sudden I thought that look was just lovely.
